Roof – Use the roof to collect water. Consider material carefully. Metal that has been treated with non-toxic coating is best.

Gutters – Here’s where the rainwater first collects. Again, you need to think about material as well as cleanliness and debris guards.

Piping – Connect piping to your gutters or downspouts to direct the rainwater to a storage tank.

Filtration – Use fine-mesh filtration to filter out any particulates or debris that made it from the roof and into the gutters.

Tank – Direct your water to some kind of storage system. There are many options and sizes and you can make your choice depending on climate, the intended use of your rainwater, and the layout of your house and/or property.

Treatment – If you’re planning to use the rainwater for anything other than flushing toilets and watering plants, you need to treat the water for contaminants such as bacteria and parasites.

Plumbing – Send your water through your regular plumbing or directly to a bathroom or some other specific part of the house.
